Shinjuku Boys is set in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, where the New Marilyn nightclub employs performers who are women living as men. They dress and present themselves in a masculine way, which is not widely accepted in Japanese society, but they are admired and desired by many of the women who visit the club.
The film follows three of these “Shinjuku Boys.” Gaish is confident and popular, but worries about being alone. Tatsu lives with his girlfriend, and Kazuki is in a relationship with a partner who lives as a woman. Through their stories, the film offers an honest look at their lives, relationships and fears, and at what it means to live outside society’s expectations.
